In Memory of Joan E. Shields
Friend and former colleague at Quantachrome Corporation, Joan E. Shields, professor emerita at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, died suddenly April 10, 2008. She is remembered as a dedicated and active educator with a passion for science. Prof. Shields joined the faculty of Long Island University, C.W. Post Campus, as an assistant professor of chemistry in 1968, became a full professor in 1974 and chaired the department from 1987 until her retirenment in 2007. She was a member of the board of directors of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society, and was chairwoman of that board from 1995 through 1998 - only the second time a woman has held the position in its 125-year history.
Prof. Shields spent some sabbatical years in the late 80's at Quantachrome, first as Research Scientist and then Director of International Sales. She co-authored the 2nd and 3rd editions of the highly successful materials science book titled "Powder Surface Area and Porosity" with Quantachrome founder Dr S. Lowell - this book having been recently updated and republished as "Characterization of Porous Solids & Powders: Surface Area, Pore Size and Density". She also authored the reference work "Structures and Energies of Polycyclic Hydrocarbons".
